Clifford (Dir. Paul Flaherty)

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Release Date: 1 April 1994

Run Time: 90 minutes

Origin: USA

Mimi's Rating: 4 straitjackets out of 5

A 90's black-comedy that got unfairly lambasted when it was released. Clifford deserves another chance.

Martin Daniels (Charles Grodin) agrees to look after his brother's son, Clifford (Martin Short). It doesn't take long for some of Clifford's more unhinged behaviours to manifest. Will Martin grip his grip on sanity? Find out in: Clifford!

Short and Grodin give two of the most committed and lunatic comedic performances in this movie. I don't know what critics back in '94 were on but I found this movie hilarious. Martin Short plays a truly psychopathic child with the most amazing facial expression. Charles Grodin plays a man simmering with barely contained rage up until the climax where he goes full Jack Torrance.

Why you should watch:

  • You like black comedies.

  • You like slapstick.

  • You like unhinged performances.

Why you shouldn't watch:

  • You think an adult man playing a little boy sounds like a stupid premise.

  • You don't like movies about devious children.
