Dracula 2000 (Dir. Patrick Lussier)

Release Date: 22 Dec 2000

Run Time: 99 minutes

Origin: USA

Mimi's Rating: 2 1/2 nü-metal bands out of 5

An aggressively 2000s take on the Dracula mythos.

When a group of thieves break into an antique shop owned by Matthew Van Helsing (descendant of Abraham Van Helsing and played by Christopher Plummer) they unleash the ancient vampire, Dracula. Now it's up to Van Helsing and his apprentice Simon (Jonathan Lee Miller) to stop him. Will they find Dracula before he can reach Van Helsing's daughter, Mary (Justine Waddell)? Find out in Dracula 2000!

There's a scene in this movie where Dracula walks through a Virgin Megastore and all the women inside are super thirsty for him and I must agree with their reaction. He is one handsome, broody goth in this movie and he makes a great modern Dracula. On the flip side, I found Jonathan Lee Miller to be pretty bland as the male lead.

Aside from handsome Dracula, I can appreciate that the movie tries to do something different with Dracula (his backstory has a crazy reveal). It's just campy enough with its high-tech thieves and steam-punk weapons to keep you entertained. The Matrix came out the year before this and it shows. So many characters are dressed like they're going to a Halloween party as Neo. Some of the music sounds very Matrix-esque also.

Bonus: this might make a good double feature with Queen of the Damned. They both have that 2000s nü-metal soundtrack. Also, Star Trek: Voyager's Jeri Ryan appears as one of Dracula's brides!

What a crazy reveal this ending was.

Why you should watch:

  • It's just campy enough with some great corny lines.

  • You want to experience the early 2000s.

Why you shouldn't watch:

  • You don't like nü-metal.

  • You don't like goofy vampire movies.
