Leviathan (Dir. George P. Cosmatos)

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Release Date: 17 March 1989

Run Time: 103 minutes

Origin: USA

Mimi's Rating: 3 1/2 goopy tentacles out of 5

I know this movie "borrows" heavily from films like Alien and The Thing but... I still love it!

Leviathan follows an undersea mining crew (a stacked cast that includes: Peter Weller, Daniel Stern, and Ernie Hudson) who discover a Soviet shipwreck, the Leviathan. As you would expect, this creepy wreck unleashes a mutagen that begins to turn the crew into goopy, tentacled monsters. Will the remaining crew escape their underwater prison? Find out in: Leviathan!

I supposed it would be fair to call this movie a rip-off of more popular films in the genre, and yes it has its problems (the pace can be a bit slow at times) but I guess I'm just a sucker for great-looking sci-fi sets and slime covered rubber monsters because I kind of loved this. There's a great cast of 80s B-listers, the aforementioned sets are lovely to look at, and there's something about underwater horror that just hits different.

Why you should watch:

  • Like me, you're a sucker for practical creature effects and awesome lived-in-looking sets.

  • You don't mind a slower-paced movie.

Why you shouldn't watch:

  • You like your movies to move a bit quicker.

  • You don't like body horror.
