Maniac Cop (Dir. William Lustig)

Release Date: 13 May 1988

Run Time: 85 minutes

Origin: USA

Mimi's Rating: 4 white gloves out of 5

The movie brave enough to ask the question, "What if cops could be the bad guys?"

Maniac Cop takes place in a gloriously gritty 80s NYC. There's a killer on the prowl (typical). A killer who witnesses claim was wearing a police uniform. The NYPD doesn't like this at all and wishes to suppress these accounts. Luckily, good cop Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins)is on the case.

McCrae teams up with Officer Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell), who is the main suspect in the murders, and Officer Theresa Mallory (Laurene Landon), an undercover vice cop.

Will they prove Jack's innocence and stop the terror that has NYC in its grip? Find out in: Maniac Cop!

Maniac Cop is one of the cult classics that lives up to the hype. Bruce Campbell is great as the slightly scuzzy cop accused of murder and Tom Atkins shines as the man who won't stop until these crimes are stopped. A fantastic supporting cast rounds out the film.

Why you should watch:

  • You like slashers, action, or even detective films.

  • You want to see Bruce Campbell do a 180 from his Evil Dead roles.

  • You love some gritty NYC.

Why you shouldn't watch:

  • You can't believe a cop could ever be crooked.

  • You don't want to see violence against women.
