Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Release Date: 23 Feb 1990

Run Time: 97 minutes

Origin: USA

Mimi's Rating: 3 1/2 sweaty Brad Dourifs out of 5

Sam's parents were part of an atomic bomb experiment that has given him the power of pyrokinesis. He soon learns these powers have terrible consequences.

Adult Sam (Brad Dourif) is working as a teacher and has a girlfriend, Lisa (Cynthia Bain). His normal life is thrown into chaos when he begins to experience spontaneous combustion via pyrokinesis. Will Sam and Lisa find a way to stop him from burning up? Find out in: Spontaneous Combustion!

Brad Dourif carries this movie. He's sweating, he's yelling, and he's acting at a calibre that is higher than this movie probably deserves. Near the end of the movie he especially excels at playing a man who is ready to explode at any moment.

Aside from that, this movie delivers the promised fiery mayhem you would expect from the title. There are decent effects throughout and some nice kills.

Why you should watch:

  • Brad Dourif's performance is worth it.

  • Some decent fire-based kills.

  • It has a pretty interesting concept.

Why you shouldn't watch:

  • It can be a bit cheesy if that's not your thing.

  • The ending is divisive.
