Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (Dir. Roger Spottiswoode)

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Release Date: 21 Feb 1992

Run Time: 87 minutes

Origin: USA

Mimi's Rating: 1 1/2 illegal gun purchases out of 5

A tough-guy cop's overbearing mother comes to visit.

When Sgt. Joe Bomowski's (Sylvester Stallone) mother, Tutti (Estelle Getty) comes to visit she wastes no time to start meddling in his life. Then, when she mistakenly buys him an illegal gun she becomes embroiled in his ongoing investigation. Will Joe and his mother learn to get along and solve the crime? Find out in, Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot!

Estelle Getty washes a gun like it's a dirty dish and it's probably the most amusing scene in the movie. Amusing might be pushing it. This movie is groans-ville and embarrassing for its main star. Stallone calls this the worst movie he's ever done. Considering his filmography, that statement might be a little hyperbolic. Or maybe too many Golden Girls re-runs have melted my brain. Either way, Estelle Getty has her moments and you might find enjoyment in seeing Stallone get humiliated. But at the end of the day, it's a perfect example of what RedLetterMedia calls a "non-medy". I can barely remember what happened and I just watched it.

My favourite thing about this movie is the behind-the-scenes story in that Arnold Schwarzenegger pretended to be interested in the project therefore tricking Stallone into taking the role. Might be one of the most devious pranks I've ever heard of.

So, if you're interested in seeing Stallone embarrass himself for 87 minutes, give this a look.

Why you should watch:

  • You're interested in early 90s film oddities.

  • You want to see Stallone be embarrassed for 87 minutes.

Why you shouldn't watch:

  • It's slow, and not that funny or compelling.
