Step aside Mrs. Lovett, there's a new cook in town. His name is Wong Chi-hang and boy can he whip up a BBQ pork bun.
Our story opens in 1978 with Wong Chi-hang (Anthony Wong) murdering his gambling buddy after he is refused a loan. This leads us to a pretty great man-on-fire effect and sets the tone for the rest of the film.
Flash forward and we follow Wong Chi-Hang to Macau. The year is 1986 and boy, it's fantastic. I loved the 80's fashions in this, especially when we are introduced to the bumbling cops who are now on the trail of our killer. Officers Bo, Robert, Bull, and King Kong. They're guided by Inspector Lee (Danny Lee) who almost always seems to have a babe on his arm. As the kids would say, he has serious rizz.
We meat Wong Chi-Hang again at the Eight Immortals Restaurant where the owner is mysteriously absent. Carnage ensues when he can't keep his murderous temper in check. The pressure from a police investigation certainly doesn't help things.
All the while, Wong Chi-Hang continues to cook the most disgusting "pork" buns I've ever seen. Food prep that is so unsanitary it'll make you sick to your stomach. As Inspector Lee says, "I don't eat BBQ pork buns, you never know what's in the filling."
Will the police put an end to these culinary crimes? Find out in: The Untold Story.
Why you should watch:
Anthony Wong is great as the deranged killer.
There's a fun cast of characters.
The interactions between the group of officers were fun.
A few black comedy bits.
Some Raimi-esque camera work at times.
Why you shouldn't watch:
If you can't handle scenes of a real (dead) pig being butchered.
There's a pretty gnarly rape about 30min in.
If you don't want to see violence against children.
You don't like gore.
